The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
